What Are Probiotics?

So you are probably wondering, "What are Probiotics?" You've heard of antibiotics and know that they help you fight infections when your are sick, but what do probiotics do?Our bodies contain bacteria that are actually beneficial to our digestive systems. This good bacteria helps the body to digest food by breaking them down to individual parts so that the body can absorb them. These types of bacteria also helps keep unwanted bacteria out of our systems. Examples of bad bacteria would be E-Coli and salmonella.

Probiotics are dietary supplements which contain the good bacteria. Probiotics can also be found in fermented and unfermented milk, yogurt, soy drinks. But due to processing of these foods, the beneficial bacteria can be destroyed during the process.

There are researchers who believe that probiotics can lead to better health. There was a study conducted in Sweden in 2005. One group of subjects was given Lactobacillus reuteri (a probiotic). The other group did not take the probiotic. The results showed that the group of people who took this probiotic missed less work due to illness than the other group.

You may wonder why the need to take probiotics if your body already creates good bacteria. There are different factors that can reduce the amount of good bacteria in your system. Some of these factors include stress, poor eating habits, and bacterial infections.

Besides providing additional good bacteria for your body, probiotics can help keep your immune system strong. Many people who take probiotics say that they feel better and have more energy to do the things that they want to do.
